Why Go DIY with Your Pet's Food and Treats

Why do you prefer home cooked meals to getting fast food on your way home from work? The answers will vary. You have better control of what you are consuming, chances are your home cooked meal will be healthier, you don't have to worry about chemicals in your food as much or what you are eating is actually real food and not overly processed slop. All of these are valid reasons.

Have you ever thought about what is in your pooches food or treats?
You should.

The cheaper the food the worse it is. Not just with chemicals and overly processed slop, but also the real food that is in there may not be something your pet should be eating. If your dog has problems with digestion you may want to take a hard look at the ingredients of your dog food.

With dog food, treats and toys being recalled constantly, you never know what is safe for Fido. There's so many articles about certain medications and treats that are dangerous for your pet, but have not been removed from shelves because there is not sufficient proof. Here is a list of all dog food that has been recalled lately for your convenience.

WHY RISK IT?!

By cooking your dog a homemade meal, you are eliminating so many risks of serious illness to death. It doesn't have to be so much extra work. You can follow the trend and meal prep for the week for your pet. By switching to homemade food and treats, you may even see a significantly larger amount of money saved in your bank account because you are feeding fido what you already have in your pantry and not having to make a special trip.

Meal prep for your pooch is so much easier than you think. Your dog and cat don't get tired of food as quickly as you do, they are used to eating the exact same thing everyday anyways, so by meal prepping, you are able to buy the food in bulk which in turn is cheaper than a regular grocery store, and you only have to make one combination of food for that week.

There are also small local pet businesses that can sell homemade treats or food for your pets. Therefore you will not only be helping small businesses in your area, your pooch will feel so loved.

Peanut Butter Banana Doggy Cake Balls

We are jumping on the cake pop bandwagon with a delicious treat for your pooch! This is a found recipe, but we tried it on our pampered pooches and they LOVED THEM!!!!

These are so easy and quick to make, your pup will love them!

Ingredients:
1 cup Whole Wheat Flour
1 teaspoon Baking Soda
1 Egg
1/2 cup Milk
2 Bananas
1/4 cup Peanut Butter
1/2 cup (1 stick) Butter, softened
1 1/2 cup Peanut Butter
1 pound Yogurt Coating Chips
1/2 cup Peanuts, crushed

Directions:
1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees fahrenheit. Use a silicone cake pan or grease and flour a 9 inch round cake pan or one 9×9 inch pan.
2. In a medium bowl mix whole wheat flour and baking soda then set aside.
3. In a large bowl mash bananas with a fork  then mix egg, milk, peanut butter and butter.
4. Once well combined add the flour mixture to the peanut butter mixture and stir until mixed.
5. Spoon cake batter into the cake pan.
6. Bake for 20 to 30 minutes, until a toothpick inserted in the middle come out clean.
7. Cool 5 minutes in pan then remove and place on wire rack to cool completely
8. Cover two baking sheets with wax paper
9. Crumble the cooled cake into a large mixing bowl until the entire cake is crumbled into a fine texture (I used a hand mixer to break up some of the bigger pieces.)
10. Stir in 1 1/2 cups peanut butter until well combined with the cake crumbs.
11. Roll you cake mix into 1/2 inch balls* and place them on the baking sheet.
12. Cover with plastic wrap and allow to chill in the refrigerator for several hours, or the freezer for 15 minutes, you want the balls to be firm enough to dip.
13. Melt your yogurt chip using you method of choice. I use my microwave and heated them for 30 seconds at a time, stirring in between until it was melted. If you have one you can also use a double boiler
14. Roll balls in  yogurt and lay on wax paper. Sprinkle with crushed peanuts while still wet and let sit until firm.
Makes 3 to 4 dozen cake balls.
